CWD Representatives Participate in Kamp Kawayan Bamboo Permaculture Workshop
September 27 to 29, 2024 — representatives from the Casiguran Water District (CWD) — Mr. Rolly H. Dela Torre, Abe Roda, and Bernardo Bo – attended the Kamp Kawayan Bamboo Permaculture Workshop at Tayabas, Quezon province. This transformative event focused on sustainable bamboo cultivation and its integration into permaculture practices.
Research indicates that bamboo is one of the most overlooked solutions to the water crisis. A single hectare of bamboo forest can store over 30,000 liters of water in its culms, which gradually replenishes the soil during the dry season. Widespread bamboo planting could serve as a viable alternative to large-scale dams.
In contrast to the significant time and resources required to construct a large dam—typically at least three years, along with community displacement and substantial debt—bamboo stands can enhance groundwater supply and facilitate water access through small water impounding dams, shallow tube wells, and irrigation canals.
The CWD representatives, alongside 17 other participants, engaged in hands-on activities such as bamboo planting, propagation, salakot making, foraging, and community cooking. They explored the ecological benefits of bamboo and its role in promoting sustainable practices.
Under the leadership of GM Engr. Eduardo P. Tejada, the Casiguran Water District is reaffirming its commitment to promoting bamboo plantations in watersheds, recognizing its potential to address water management challenges while enhancing environmental sustainability.
